One of the strongest drugs in the world could be hiding in your kitchen. Turmeric. Specifically curcumin (diferuloylmethane), which is what makes up the yellow pigment in turmeric, first isolated in 1815, crystallized in 1870. Even in ancient times has been revered for its anti-inflammatory properties. Cultures like the Nepalese would boil 2tsp of the root with water and gargle for colds and tonsillitis. Ancient and even modern Peruvians would even treat STD’s with it.
Duke University Medical Center has cited over 200 cases in which turmeric has led to significant improvement of complicated medical conditions, and more than 700 for cancer. Most of these trials, usually in a controlled environment concluded that turmeric appears to outperform many pharmaceuticals in its effects against several chronic, debilitating diseases, and does so with virtually no adverse side effects.
The reasons why are because curcumin is a COX-2-inhibitors (the COX-2 enzyme promotes pain, swelling and inflammation; inhibitors selectively block that enzyme). Further study show that it is effective at treating illness because it physically binds to as many as 33 different proteins, including various growth regulating proteins and enzymes that cause swelling and negative physical reaction to toxins and cancerous cells within the body.
Another incredible fact about turmeric and curcumin is how very selective it is. It influences structurally unrelated membrane proteins across several signaling pathways. This means that it changes they way cells grow, IE cancer cells are destroyed at their connections whereas healthy cells are enhanced.
Further study of Turmeric is key because it is already shown to be more effective than these 3 very common drugs, with none of their negative side effects.
- Aspirin – By 1938, it was discovered aspirin was gastro-toxic and in recent studies dating back to as soon as 2011, low-dose aspirin almost doubles the likelihood of upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. Adding drugs such as high-dose corticosteroids (steroid-hormone hybrids) raises the risk even more. By the numbers, however, it is still widely viewed in the medical world to have far more cardiovascular benefits than negatives. That would, in theory be dependent on the patient.
- Ibuprofin – Introduced in 1955, it was developed out of the necessity to find a more powerful and better-tolerated drug than aspirin. In 1974 it first began to appear in American pharmacies. Ibuprofen causes fewer stomach problems than aspirin. It is also effective for relieving menstrual discomfort but there is a catch, it does but cannot be taken by people with certain conditions, such as an allergy to aspirin.In recent studies dating back to just last year 2015, it was found that Ibuporfin is a lot more dangerous than has been widely accepted over long-time use. Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins by blocking an enzyme called cyclo-oxygenase. This is a good thing for stopping pain and swelling but can be problematic, too, because it also stops normal functions of the blood, heart and gut.
Where Aspirin prevents platelets from clumping together, which prevents the formation of dangerous clots that can block a vessel and cause a heart attack or stroke. Ibuprofin works inversely, also affect another enzyme that promotes clotting. The most frequently reported adverse effects were gastrointestinal (GI) in nature and included nausea, vomiting, flatulence, and diarrhea.
- Metformin – A common diabetes drug, In 2009, Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Communications published a study detailing how supplementing with turmeric can help reverse diabetes. The study discovered that curcumin in turmeric is literally 400 times more potent than Metformin (a common diabetes drug) in activating AMPK which improves insulin sensitivity which can help reverse Type 2 Diabetes.On other occasions, human trails such as the one published in 2012, in the American Diabetic Association’s own journal, Diabetes Care, and titled, “Curcumin extract for the prevention of type 2 diabetes,” found that the administration of six capsules containing 250 mg of curcumin daily for 9 months was 100% effective at preventing the development of type 2 diabetes in prediabetics.
These findings are just the tip of the iceberg for the potentials for curcumin to not only effectively treat and reduce type-1 and type-2 diabetes, but also an instrumental role in reversing damage cause by these diseases.
These are just a few drugs in which the evidence mounted is undeniable. Turmeric is also in human trail phase with patients with even more serious illnesses such as cancer. In many the same ways it outperforms aspirin, curcumin shows the same potential for obliterating cancer cells without damaging healthy ones.
